Cat Dental Care

Brushing is the best way to help prevent dental disease in cats. Ideally, aim to brush daily – but even a few times a week can make a real difference. Start slowly and gently using a soft, cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, and reward your cat after each session. Focus only on what they’re comfortable with and stop if they become stressed.

Not all cats will tolerate brushing – and that’s okay. For some, it can cause significant stress, so it’s better to focus on alternative dental care options and make sure they have regular veterinary dental check-ups. Even with good home care, professional cleaning under anaesthesia may still be needed to remove tartar below the gumline.

Look out for warning signs such as:

• Visible changes: redness or bleeding gums, or brown/yellow tartar on the teeth
• Eating changes: loss of appetite, preference for softer food, chewing on one side, dropping food or struggling to chew
• Increased drooling or salivation
• Bad breath
• Weight loss
• Behavioural changes: sleeping or grooming less, playing less, being less active or avoiding touch around the face
• Other signs: pawing at the mouth or resisting facial contact

Many of these signs can also appear with non-dental concerns, so if you notice any of them, it’s a good idea to speak with your vet.

In most cases, yes – the powder can be used with most commercial cat foods. However, because it contains seaweed (a natural source of iodine), it shouldn’t be used alongside diets already high in iodine, such as raw or homemade diets containing fish, seaweed, egg or dairy.

This is especially important for cats on iodine-restricted diets, such as those being treated for hyperthyroidism, where even small amounts of extra iodine – from supplements or food toppers – can interfere with treatment. If your cat is on a prescription or therapeutic diet, always check with your vet before adding any new supplement or powder.
